Decoding African American Spirituals
A sing, hum, clap, stomp-along music experience for the entire family. Participants will learn songs in the time honored call and response oral tradition. Many of the songs contain coded lyrics which will be explained in the context of the struggle for freedom. Participants will also hear about the early African-American tradition of banjo and drum playing. Gloria Matlock and Michael Nix explore the historical context of African American Spirituals and the role they have played in the survival of Black people in America in a sing along concert.
