Nick McDonald discusses THE GRAND ILLUSION
A two-for-one weekend with Nick MacDonald, Harvard classmate of local anti-war hero, Randy Kehler. On Friday, Nick will present four of his “personal truth” short 1970s films (now archived at the Museum of Modern Art) exploring Vietnam, Attica and other topics. On Saturday, Macdonald, who is the author of In Search of La Grande Illusion (2014, McFarland), will introduce and discuss Grand Illusion, one of the great anti-war films of all time, directed by Jean Renoir, one of the greatest directors of all time. Set up as a prisoner of war escape movie (later copied by films like “The Great Escape”), Grand Illusion is also a meditation about war and peace, social class, prejudice and friendship. Jean Gabin, Erich Von Stroheim, Dita Parlo. 1937.
Director: Jean Renoir. B&W. 113 min. Not Rated.
